Inessa Polenko, a renowned 39-year-old Russian influencer, suffered a fatal accident while trying to capture a photograph for her social networks. According to reports from The Sun, the woman fell from a height of approximately 50 meters on a cliff in the town of Gragy, in the state of Georgia, United States.
The incident occurred when Inessa was at a viewpoint looking for content for her trips and recommendations. Unfortunately, the influencer crossed a security barrier that prohibited access to dangerous areas to take the long-awaited photograph. At that moment, she lost her balance and fell into the void, suffering serious injuries.
Despite the quick arrival of paramedics and the efforts of the emergency team, Polenko’s injuries sustained during the accident proved fatal and he died in hospital.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers associated with selfie obsession. According to a study carried out by the iO Foundation of Spain, between 2008 and 2021, 379 deaths related to taking selfies have been recorded. Most of these cases are the result of falls from heights, transportation accidents, and drowning.
Given this worrying situation, the United States National Library of Medicine recommends the creation of “no selfie zones” in dangerous places, such as mountain tops, tall buildings and lakes, with the aim of reducing the number of fatalities.
Inessa Polenko, in addition to her work as an influencer, was a beautician who worked in Moscow. Over the past few months, she had gained popularity on Instagram thanks to travel photographs of her in destinations such as Dubai, Egypt and Crimea, amassing almost 10,000 followers on the platform.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the risks that can come with searching for the perfect social media photo.
