They put pressure on Red Bull

McLaren is ahead of Red Bull in the Formula One constructors’ championship. They now hope that Lando Norris can put pressure on Max Verstappen for the drivers’ title.

Oscar Piastri’s victory last week in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix put McLaren at the top of the team standings – the key to winning the lavish financial prize – but his teammate Norris only cut Verstappen’s lead a little.

After starting 15th, Norris overtook Verstappen near the end to finish fourth, but the Dutchman still leads by 59 points heading into the Singapore GP.

The topic of conversation this week is McLaren’s apparent flexible rear wing, which could help it at high speed. Piastri said Thursday that it is legal and is not “the magic bullet” to his recent success.

F1 is not decided and Ferrari and Mercedes continue fighting to win.

McLaren will still have a tough fight even if Red Bull lacks pace at a track where Verstappen has never won.

Charles Leclerc was the fastest in yesterday’s first practice, but only by 0.076 seconds over Norris. Carlos Sainz Jr. was third fastest in the other Ferrari and Verstappen was fourth.

Norris beat Leclerc by a similar margin in the second practice of 0.058 seconds ahead of Sainz.

The weather is key

The heat and humidity of the Singapore street circuit make it one of the most difficult. Even water can become so hot that it is difficult to drink.

Russell said he did special training during the summer holidays and went running in three layers of clothing to simulate the Singapore heat.

“We lose about four kilograms of fluid in an hour and a half of running, so it’s a good weight loss regimen if that’s what you want,” Russell said.— AP
