They punished her by stealing her daughter in Neuquén

Balbina González de López was 36 years old and was the wife of José Belindo López, who had been appointed chief of police of the Neuquén Territory, between July and November 1904. These were the times in which the capital was progressively moved from Chos Malal towards the old Confluence Place.

In the midst of all this process of change and reorganization, Balbina thought that a School was the fundamental pillar for society that began with the new capital.

The historical records show that there was an official request before the Governor of the Territory, launched by a group of women, led by the commissioner’s wife. Finally the educational establishment was created, of course. But this woman’s story, if you look at it from the inside of her private life, was very hard.

Everyone assured that Balbina was the commissioner’s wife (she herself was sure of it), but according to court records it was not. This would be minor information if it were not known what really happened to this woman and the daughter she had with José Belindo López.

One day Balbina became pregnant and had a girl. Maria Isabel. Some time later it was known, or at least that was what the commissioner wanted to establish, that they were not married “neither before the law nor before God.”
Things that can happen. But what happened during those years?

According to the court records of the time, the eight-month-old girl was “removed” from the home where she lived with her mother, “in the Fifth Department of Neuquén by the commissioner José Belindo López.”

That same day, Balbina filed a complaint once morest the father of her daughter, beforeThe Justice of the Peace of the Confluencia, Pascual Claro, who declared himself incompetent and did not raise the complaint to the legal judge, then in Chos Malal. He clearly claimed for his “kidnapped” daughter.

The deception that the loss of her daughter unleashed for the woman was that the commissioner told her that he had registered her in the Civil Registry in the name of both. But she only appeared on her birth certificate as the daughter of Belindo López.

Was this enough? Of course not. The man managed, under pressure, for Balbina to go to Buenos Aires with pretexts that are not known, but it is certain that they were clear attempts at manipulation. And it was at that moment that the man delivered the lethal blow to him. He accused her of running away with a soldier and of abandoning her daughter.

Balbina never got her daughter back and no tributes are paid to him either. The only one that was awarded was in 2004, in the National Congress for the centenary of the city of Neuquén. She was recognized as a pioneer of public schools in the city of Neuquén. Nothing else.
