The Chamber approved resolution 911. It asks the President of the Republic to incorporate, within the framework of the processing of the project that creates the Ministry of Public Security, the National Customs Service as an entity dependent on said portfolio.

For the above, it is proposed that the pertinent instructions be delivered to the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Carolina Tohá.

The document recalls that the National Customs Service is a State agency dependent on the Ministry of Finance. It fulfills a strategic and fundamental function in the development of foreign trade. Likewise, in the protection of the interests of the State and in tax collection.

But, in addition, it is highlighted that this public entity also plays a leading role against organized crime. This is necessary in a context in which criminals use new techniques to evade controls in high traffic areas, such as the air and sea ports of our country.

Hence the relevance of Customs’ supervisory role regarding import and export operations. “It is our first line of action against the actions of organized crime in the exit and entry of drugs, weapons, etc. A strong Customs accounts for a safe country,” the text emphasizes. At this level, it is considered urgent to rethink the institutions that have influence and whose actions can be fundamental to cut off all types of supplies to organized crime gangs.
