Days before the Ecuadorian elections, and shortly following the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, a new political leader was killed. This is Pedro Briones, close to former President Rafael Correa.
The fatal victim, Pedro Briones, is a militant of the left-wing Revolución Ciudadana party, politically linked to Correa. Briones was shot at least once, official sources confirmed.
This crime occurs five days following the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.
The news was confirmed by presidential candidate Luisa González, who published that Briones was “fallen into the hands of violence.”
«Ecuador lives its bloodiest time. We owe this to the total abandonment of an inept government and a state taken over by mafias. My solidarity hug to the family of comrade Pedro Briones, who fell into the hands of violence. Change is urgent!” González remarked.
Former President Correa regretted this murder and noted on Twitter: “Another of our colleagues was murdered in Esmeralda. Enough!”.
Likewise, another referent who expressed her anguish and anger over the crime was former assemblywoman Paola Cabezas.
