MEXICO CITY (AP) — The search for seven young people kidnapped in the north-central Mexican state of Zacatecas might have a tragic end following six bodies and one survivor were discovered in a remote area on Wednesday.
The Zacatecas Attorney General’s Office indicated in a statement that the survivor and the six bodies were located in the municipality of Villanueva. However, the agency has not yet confirmed that these are the people who were kidnapped from a farm on Sunday.
The young survivor had two head injuries and his condition is stable, state authorities reported.
After the disappearance of the young people, their relatives held street protests to pressure the authorities in Zacatecas, a region devastated by violence.
The secretary of the government of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes, said that three people were arrested in the last few hours for their alleged responsibility in the kidnapping of the young people.
The case is just the most recent incident of this type so far this year in the country.
In August, a video circulated on social networks in which the last moments of five young people kidnapped in the state of Jalisco, in the west of the country, were captured.
Another similar event occurred in May, when eight young people were murdered in Jalisco following apparently trying to leave their job at a call center run by a violent drug cartel.
On the other hand, the Mexican army entered the town of Frontera Comalapa on Wednesday, in southern Mexico, where a dispute is taking place between the Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels for control of routes for the transfer of drugs. , weapons and migrants.
Federal forces carried out patrols in the towns of Frontera Comalapa, Siltepec and Motozintla, which had remained isolated, without electricity and without commercial activities.
It is the second time that the army has attempted to restore order in that region, following a brief similar incursion was carried out in May.
Lieutenant Colonel Félix Moreno Ibarra assured that the electricity supply was restored on Wednesday, which will allow the population to resume their commercial activities.
The officer reported that the security operation will prevail indefinitely until full control of the territory is reestablished. A few days ago, 800 elements of the Army, the National Guard and other state corporations were sent to the border with Guatemala.
The deployment was carried out following alleged members of the Sinaloa cartel displayed dozens of homemade gun vehicles and armed men over the weekend.
The Mexican government also sent a hundred soldiers to the state of Nuevo León on Wednesday to reinforce security efforts following a day of violence in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, capital of the entity, where the remains of 12 people were located in different points and six others were killed.
The wave of violence spread on Wednesday to the municipality of Hualahuises, where armed men set vehicles on fire and blocked a road following a confrontation between police forces and alleged criminals.
