A group of international astronomers carried out an investigation of galaxies to demonstrate the existence of a set of patterns present in the Milky Way that is repeated in other cosmic structures and found 56 “twin” galaxies, according to an article published in Universe Today magazine. .

The study is carried out by astronomers from the United States, the United Kingdom and Chile, and included the analysis of 10,000 galaxies with the purpose of looking for examples of structures with attributes similar to the Milky Way.
138 galaxies superficially similar to ours were selected, identifying that 56 galaxies are very similar and 27 totally different.
As the study reveals, the set of galaxies completely different from ours would present a series of conditions that might be those that the Milky Way itself experiences in the future, thus anticipating its evolution.
The scientists reduced the size of the sample, which is nonetheless a small slice of the whole, selecting only those galaxies that matched, at least superficially, what we know regarding the Milky Way into three broad categories.
First, they filtered out galaxies with a total mass similar to that of the Milky Way. Second, they ruled out galaxies that had a very different distribution, and finally, they looked for galaxies with one of the shapes accepted by current standards.
The central characteristic of the first group of “twin” galaxies of the Milky Way is that they are structures that seem to have no differentiation between their inner and outer regions.
