The National Meteorological Service launched this Christmas Monday yellow and orange weather alerts for strong storms for eleven provinces, mainly in the north of the country.

The orange alert for storms falls on Catamarca, Chaco, Corrientes, Formosa, Jujuy, Misiones, Salta and Tucumán. The yellow, meanwhile, over Santiago del Estero. The agency also warned of strong winds in Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego.

The orange level implies that dangerous meteorological phenomena for society, life, property and the environment are expected, while yellow indicates possible meteorological phenomena with the potential for damage and risk of momentary interruption of daily activities.

  • Secure objects that can be thrown by the wind.
  • Stay away from trees as the force of the wind might break some of their branches.
  • Do not park your vehicle under trees.
  • Keep your house closed as airtight as possible.
  • Get informed from authorities. If you or someone else is affected by this phenomenon, contact local emergency agencies.
  • Always have an emergency backpack ready with a flashlight, radio, documents and telephone.

The General Directorate of Highway Police reported the following recommendations in response to the alert issued by the SMN:

  • Given the loss of visibility due to suspended dust or rain, I reduced my speed without braking on the road or shoulder.
  • Remember that on wet roads the vehicle’s grip level decreases.
  • Increase the safety distance between vehicles and avoid overtaking.
