They insist on a coup d’état in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA (EFE).— The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, said yesterday that she will not allow “a coup d’état” to be organized in her country and maintained that the 2025 elections, in which she predicts a new victory for the ruling Freedom Party and Refoundación (Libre), will be “clean and transparent.”

“Coup d’état never again,” emphasized Xiomara Castro in her speech before thousands of supporters of her party and public employees gathered in front of the Presidential House in Tegucigalpa, after last week she denounced an attempted coup against her government following the disclosure from a video of his brother-in-law meeting with drug traffickers.

The president stressed that those who “refuse to pay taxes, those who looted the State coffers, those who destroyed and privatized public companies with corrupt public-private trusts, those who negotiated sovereignty and sold the territory in Zedes (Zones of Employment and Development), they have to be held accountable and I will not allow them to organize a coup d’état ever again.”

According to EFE, thousands of protesters gathered outside the Presidential House to support Xiomara Castro and reject the “attempted coup d’état” denounced by the president on September 3, hours after the American NGO InSight Crime reported a video showing his brother-in-law, Carlos Zelaya, in a meeting with drug traffickers negotiating a bribe for the party.

Three days before the broadcast of the audiovisual piece, Carlos Zelaya, brother of former President Manuel Zelaya, acknowledged having met with these traffickers and resigned from his position as deputy and secretary of the Honduran Parliament.
