Cuban authorities, through a provincial court, handed down a life prison sentence in an oral and public process that sought to set a precedent for the person responsible for the murder of a farmer from Cienfuegos, in order to steal a beef from him.
According to official sources, the authorities gathered testimonial, documentary and forensic evidence, which involved four subjects in the theft and slaughter of livestock, including an alleged murderer.
The prosecution described the crime as serious because it violates a person’s most important legal right: the right to life. Therefore, the penalty imposed was the most drastic: perpetual confinement.
“The sacrifice of a bull led to the deprivation of the life of a citizen who was only defending part of his assets,” said First Lieutenant Ariday Arteaga Fonseca, investigator of the case that occurred in 2023 in Cienfuegos, in Noticiero Naciona.
Arteaga Fonseca explained that the murderer killed the farmer “following he realized that the victim had betrayed him,” since shortly before dying the farmer visited the attacker’s house and told him that he had seen him during the theft of the cattle.

Prosecutor Yaranaicy Figueredo supported the sentence imposed on the attacker. The judicial official stated that the murderer was sentenced to life imprisonment, “considering the seriousness of the act committed, which affected the most valuable legal asset that a person has, which is life.”
According to the court ruling, the other three involved in the case were sentenced to different sanctions, depending on their degree of responsibility in the events. These only had to do with the theft of cattle and not with the murder of the Cienfuegos farmer.
Cattle theft in Cuba has increased in recent years, due to the serious economic crisis suffered by the island. Also other crimes, such as murders and violent robberies.
