Nearly 20,000 foreign fighters have declared their willingness to volunteer to help Ukraine fight Russia, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister announced on Sunday.
“Currently, their number is regarding 20,000, and they mainly come from European countries,” Dmytro Koleba told CNN.
He considered that “a lot of people hate Russia” for years, but they did not dare to oppose it.
“When people saw that the Ukrainians were fighting and did not surrender, they rushed to join the fight,” he added.
As the Ukrainian Foreign Minister said that he “recognizes this need to fight”, he stressed that “the most important” is to receive “political, economic and military” help from the rest of the world, especially air defense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in late February the formation of an “international squad” of volunteers to help repel the Russian invasion. He called on foreigners wishing to join the battle, to communicate with the embassies of Ukraine in their countries.
Denmark allowed its citizens to participate, as did Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Lise Terrace. But the Chief of Staff of the British Armed Forces, Admiral Tony Radakin, considered Sunday that it was “illegal and unhelpful” for the British people to go to Ukraine to fight.
