The Mexican government confirmed this Friday the discovery of the body of Debanhi Escobaran 18-year-old girl who disappeared on April 9 in the northern state of New Lion in a case that shook the country.

The undersecretary of Public Security of the federal government, Ricardo Mejía, explained that the local authorities They located the body of the young woman in a cistern of the Nueva Castilla motelin the municipality of Escobedo in the metropolitan area of ​​Monterrey, the second most populated in the country.

“In the last communication that was had with the prosecutor (from Nuevo León, Gustavo Guerrero), a few moments ago, he informed us that the body was rescued from the cisternwho took him to the forensic medical service to do the necropsy, “he said.

The official recalled that Escobar came from a party and got out of a taxi on the highway from Monterrey to Nuevo Laredor, although it has not been clarified how the body arrived at the motel.

The driver took a photo of the young woman on the road that went viral nationally, sparking feminist protests demanding her appearance.

In his daily conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described of “unfortunate” the factof which the causes are still unknown and if it was a femicide.

The president clarified that the investigation corresponds to the Government of Nuevo León and the State Attorney General’s Office, but offered the disposition of the federal government and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

The father of the young woman also criticized the failures of the local Prosecutor’s Office for its delay in reacting.

The case shows the wave of sexist violence and disappearances in Mexico, where more than 10 women are murdered a day and there are more than 99,000 people who have not been located since 1964, according to official figures.
