Vegetable and legume merchants who work in the Maracay Free Market, Aragua state, said they are going through a “critical” situation due to the absence of some tubers and vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, lettuce, celery, leeks and green dressings, which are key to preparing food for the Venezuelan table.

An explanation is found in the post-election street events that occurred in several cities in the country, which have generated an atmosphere of uncertainty and guardedness.

According to the sources, this situation prevented distributors, mostly from the Andean region of the country, from delivering merchandise in the central region in recent days.

According to José Angulo, a merchant, this gives rise to price speculation by some retailers, which affects the pockets of consumers because they are at the end of the distribution chain.

This situation caused some sales outlets to remain closed yesterday.

As for the products that are available, Donata Pérez, a vendor, mentioned that tomatoes are offered at 65 bolivars per kilo, white onions at 120 bolivars and bananas continue at 40 bolivars per kilogram.

Meanwhile, green dressings can be purchased for 100 and 120 bolivars per kilogram, because they are included in the list of Andean products.

They hope that everything will return to normal starting this week with the arrival of new merchandise.

However, they fear that prices will be higher than expected.

It is worth noting that this same situation has been observed for several days in stores and supermarkets in Maracay, where it is common to see some empty shelves of the aforementioned items.
