CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Authorities have euthanized the leader of a pack of dingoes that attacked a jogger on a popular Australian resort island.
Sarah Peet, 23, was attacked by three or four indigenous Australian canines on Monday while jogging on a beach in K’gari, Queensland, the world’s largest sand island, formerly known as Fraser Island. .
The victim, a Brisbane resident, was airlifted to a hospital on the mainland in stable condition. The health department declined to provide an update on her condition on Thursday due to patient confidentiality.
Rangers captured and euthanized the leader of the herd on Wednesday, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service said.
“Culling a high-risk dingo is always a last resort and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service’s tough decision was supported by the island’s traditional owners, the Butchulla people,” the department said in a statement.
He was the second dingo to be euthanized on the island in recent weeks for his threatening behavior. Authorities blame the animals’ growing audacity on tourists who ignore the rules and feed them or encourage them to come close to post images on social media.
At the end of 2021, following the end of the restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the younger specimens, suspicious, avoided people. But their dangerous interactions with humans are on the rise due to encouragement from tourists as the number of visitors increases.
Peet deliberately did not encourage the dingoes to get close to her.
Visitors to the World Heritage-listed national park have been warned not to run outside fenced-off areas because of the risk of being chased by dingoes.
