The Supreme Court of Justice endorsed this Wednesday the extradition to the United States of Álvaro Fredy Córdoba Ruiz, brother of the senator Piety Cordova. The man is requested on the charge of “concert to import narcotics” by the Court of the Southern District of New York.

The high court issued a concept “favorable to the extradition request formalized by the United States government through its Embassy in our country against the Colombian citizen Álvaro Fredy Córdoba Ruiz.”

Now everything is in the hands of the Colombian government to sign the document that authorizes the extradition of the parliamentarian’s brother.

Cordoba arrested for drug trafficking

Cordoba was arrested last February in Medellin after the United States requested his extradition for alleged links to drug trafficking activities.

The brother of the legislator of the leftist Historical Pact, the government coalition, was a candidate for the Medellin Council for the Liberal Party in 2011.

When her brother was arrested, today’s senator assured that neither of them had “any relationship with drug trafficking or armed groups.” She called for an end to “the political persecution” against her and her family.

Piedad Córdoba is accused of having alleged ties to Colombian businessman Alex Saab, alleged figurehead of Nicolás Maduro, detained in the United States.

She had also been a senator between 1994 and 2010 for the Liberal Party. In 2010, she was disqualified for 18 years by the then Attorney General of Colombia, Alejandro Ordóñez, for alleged links with the FARC guerrillas, now a political party.

The measure was annulled in October 2016 by the Council of State. The senator was able to resume her political activity, with which she reached Congress in the March 13 elections for the 2022-2026 period.
