After the former head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office once morest Impunity (FECI) in Quetzaltenango, Virginia Laparra, was convicted of abuse of authority, several social organizations and political entities have demanded her release, considering it unfair and an act of revenge.
To express their rejection, entities and political figures created a campaign to raise funds to pay the bail that would allow their release.
“Those of us who promote this campaign consider that the conviction of the former prosecutor is unjust and an act of revenge on those who co-opt power in Guatemala, for which reason we request your support to be able to pay the bail and free Virginia from such an injustice,” they indicated through of a campaign published in GoFundme.
They also indicated that donations will be transparent and managed through the GoFundme page. Up to now, 3,754 dollars have been collected, following a sentence of four years in prison, commutable at a rate of 10 quetzales per day.
Accusation
Laparra was the head of the FECI in Quetzaltenango, just last Friday, December 16, she was sentenced to four commutable years in prison by Judge Oly González, of the Eighth Criminal Sentencing Court, accused of abuse of authority.
The process once morest her began in March 2022 following a complaint filed by the High Risk Judge of Quetzaltenango, Lesther Castellanos Rodas, in 2018, who accused her of having leaked information. The complaint was dismissed, but the current Attorney General Consuelo Porras reactivated it.
