In September of last year, a woman entered the operating room of the Cipolletti Model Polyclinic for appendicitis. During the surgical intervention, she explained to her family, she suffered a cardiac arrest and, due to a lack of controls, the doctors realized following several minutes and the woman remained in a vegetative state. Diary RÍO NEGRO spoke with Ezequiel, son of the woman for whom they denounce malpractice.
Herminda del Carmen Sandoval is 50 years old. On September 27, 2022, she was operated on in the Cipolletti Model Polyclinic for an acute episode of appendicitis. A simple intervention that due to alleged malpractice resulted in the brain death of the woman.
“My mother was admitted to the polyclinic on September 24 with an acute picture of appendicitis, she spent three days waiting for a place in the operating room and finally on September 27 she was admitted. It was going to be a simple 10 minute operation, very fast. That’s what we thought,” Ezequiel, one of Herminda’s sons, began to recount.
In the middle of the operation, as reported by the son, the anesthesiologist left the operating room, leaving the woman without any control of her vital signs. “At that moment my mother suffered a cardiac arrest, she spent seven minutes in which her brain did not receive oxygen. They realized when she was already purple, ”explained Ezequiel.
“According to reports, the problem arose when she was given anesthesia due to the doctor’s lack of control, who had to control her until she woke up from the anesthesia. He was not there, he left the operating room. This was stated by other members of the medical team. It’s a terrible situation,” he said. Michel Rischmann, plaintiff attorney.
Once Herminda came out of the operation, the doctors’ decision was to induce her into a coma due to the damage her heart had suffered. “At that moment my brothers and I were summoned to talk regarding what had happened. There was the surgeon and a doctor, no one else. They were covering up the situation all the time, saying they didn’t know how this might have happened,” Herminda’s son recounted.
The 50-year-old woman was admitted to the Cipolletti model polyclinic until December. “The whole time my mom was there they gave us hope that she was getting better. We even spoke several times with the owner of the clinic who told us that he was going to investigate, that he did not understand what had happened. Always covering their professionals”, explained Ezequiel.
Since December Herminda has been admitted to a rehabilitation clinic in the city of Neuquén. “It can no longer be there, we are waiting for authorization from the social work to move it. We never thought something like this might happen, they left a family without a support. My mother has four children, a grandson in her charge, friends, daughters-in-law, relatives who are destroyed today, ”Ezequiel remarked.
Malpractice at Cipolletti: What is the status of the case?
A hearing was held on Friday where the anesthesiologist was notified of the charges. “Today he is the only defendant in the case but we seek to gather information to expand the formulation of charges to other doctors who intervened in the surgery,” Richmann explained.
Richmann commented that in the midst of this situation, the Polyclinic decided to stop paying Hermelinda’s assets to her children and place her in “position reservation status.
This not only implies not receiving salary, but also that the woman would no longer have the social work service offered by her job position.. “There is already a labor cause on the way”, highlighted the plaintiff lawyer.
