Both Apple and Meta have sought ways to enter the metaverse in their own way.

With the presentation of Apple Vision Pro during the keynote WWDC 2023 held on June 5, Apple fully enters the battle for the conquest of the metaverse. Although the company has tried by all means avoid referring to that conceptsome of the features announced along with its new extended reality headset are closely related with the virtual world that has been promoted for some time by other companies, such as Meta.
Precisely one of the features of Vision Pro reminds us of something similar to what Meta announced shortly following making its name change It’s been a little over a year now. We talk regarding virtual avatarswhich allow users to create their own contrived representation to interact in the virtual world with other people.
and if well the approach of both companies is similarthe execution it mightn’t be more different. Over the last few hours, the networks have been flooded with images and videos that compare the metaverse avatars of Meta with those of Applehighlighting the obvious superiority of the solution developed by those of Cupertino.
Apple and Meta will fight for the conquest of the metaverse… with a very different approach
In the Vision Pro announcement, Apple took the opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of your new helmet at the time of identify the user’s facial features and generate a virtual representation which might later be used to participate in video calls via FaceTime, and probably in other virtual environments as well (although the metaverse was never referenced), including the registering the expressions and movements of the hands.
Meta has already announced something similar in the past, although as is evident in the comparative images, execution is very differentand Mark Zuckerberg’s company is committed to a aesthetic more cartoon and not so realistic like Apple’s. It is clear that each company has decided to follow a different path… but still, los memes and the comparisons have not been long in coming:

Is Meta really behind Apple?
Although the enormous difference between the two types of avatars is still striking, the reality is that Meta has been working for a while in new technologies that allow them to generate much more realistic user representations.
In fact, just a few months ago, Meta itself announced its new generation of three-dimensional avatars intended for use in the metaverse, with an aesthetic infinitely more realistic and comparable to that of Apple avatars. They were advertised with the name of Codec Avatars during the Meta Connect 2022 conference, and in the video below these lines you can see a demonstration:
Despite this, those of Cupertino continue to have an advantage. While Apple allows you to create one of its avatars using “only” the Vision Pro glasses, Meta requires the use of sophisticated entertainment gadgets installed in the laboratories of the Reality Labs division of Meta, and the process can take several hours.
Probably, sooner or later, Meta will end up providing its users with the possibility of generate photorealistic avatars in a more accessible way and that does not require specialized equipment. But until that time comes, I’m afraid the memes are not going to give us truce.
