This Friday, May 10, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office coordinated the capture of an individual accused of the illegal sale of Guatemalan cultural heritage on social networks.
The captured person was identified as Sergio “N”. According to the Public Ministry (MP), this person is involved in the illegal sale of books and documents that constitute part of the country’s valuable cultural heritage.
According to the investigating entity, the sale was through the social network Facebook.
The investigation began following a complaint filed on September 8, 2023 by a citizen who purchased used books through a Facebook page.
These books, which bore the seal of the National Library, aroused suspicions regarding their origin.
The MP, following up on the case, was able to verify that the detainee was the owner of a page on the aforementioned social network.
During a search procedure at a property in Ciudad San Cristóbal II, zone 8 of Mixco, several documents and books that belonged to the National Library were found.
What was seized was being illegally offered for sale by the captured person and it is presumed that the material is more than a hundred years old.
The MP warned that the illegal sale of this type of goods threatens the identity and history of our country.
