To promote the health of the elderly and provide them with well-being in their quality of life, the Multidisciplinary Brigade of the Ministry of Social Development, led by Alejandra Del Moral Vela, visited an elderly couple in the Mexican capital, in order to offer them medical, gerontological and psychological care.
Pablo Javier Calzada, a resident artisan from the community of San Andrés Cuexcontitlán, who referred to being in charge of his parents, Rosa Calzada Valdés and Juan Javier González, 103 and 94 years old, respectively.
Pablo explained that, as a result of a fall, his father Juan broke his leg and due to lack of financial resources the injury was not treated, resulting in difficulties in his mobility, which is why he is in a wheelchair; while his mother, Rosa, suffers from fluid retention.
It was following the fracture that the couple felt more vulnerable and their children took turns at home to provide them with the necessary care; however, they chose to stay in the home of their son, who explained that “today, they do not depend on themselves, but on the care of my whole family; of my wife, of my children, of those of us who live here at home”, taking into account that the support has always been present.
Pablo’s first interest was to manage a walker so that his parents would have a more comfortable life and later, the professionals from the Multidisciplinary Brigade visited the couple’s home to assess their situation and from there, there was greater support from the Government headed by Alfredo Del Mazo Maza.
According to Nelly Albarrán Reyes, a doctor in the Multidisciplinary Brigade, when they visited them “they had malnutrition, we found them with sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and strength), cognitive impairment and we also found them very reluctant.”
For her part, Gerontologist Jessica Bautista Navarrete explained that “they had many needs, both medical and care from the family, both basic and instrumental activities of daily life did not exist in them, there was no ability to do them”.
The assessment showed that the couple did not live in adequate conditions for their age and it was not favorable in their integral development, however, the Multidisciplinary Brigade focused its actions to direct them to achieve their physical and emotional well-being.
Due to the fact that older adults speak Otomí, the appropriate channels are sought to establish communication between the couple and health professionals, so that they follow the recommendations made, which has led to noticing progress and improvement in their health thanks to the visits. that the Brigade carried out every two months.
