This Monday was shot dead in the province of Guayas, Ecuador, the prosecutor of the Persons and Guarantees Unit of Guayaquil, Édgar Edmundo Escobar Zambrano, who was investigating the massacre that left 65 dead in the Litoral Penitentiary between the 12 and 13 of November 2021, among other criminal cases.
The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office reported that the official was shot in the Pedro Carbo square, in front of the La Merced building, in the center of the city of Guayaquil, where the offices of the Guayas Provincial Prosecutor’s Office are located, a town where the Government of Guillermo Lasso has maintained a state of emergency since last August 15.
The institution explained that they carried out criminal investigations at the scene of the murder, where officials collected evidence of the event. Moments following the homicide, the police authorities captured two men suspected of being a hitman.
“Once they are placed under the orders of the competent authorities, their legal situation will be resolved. The two detainees were transferred to the Cuartel Modelo Flagrancia Unit and placed under the orders of the judicial authorities,” he added.
“In the police action, a motorcycle and the weapon with which they would have shot the victim were seized,” added the Prosecutor’s Office.
Through Twitter, several videos were also released in which Escobar’s alleged assassins are seen fleeing from the Police and later captured in one of the Guayaquil neighborhoods.
One of them would be a 16-year-old teenager, so according to Ecuadorian law he would not be charged, Djalma Blum, a criminal law attorney and friend of prosecutor Escobar, explained on Twitter.

The cases investigated by Escobar
Lawyer Blum also pointed out that for months she has denounced that outside the Guayas Prosecutor’s Office there is “the presence of criminals watching” and “nobody did anything.”
According to local media, in addition to the prison massacre for which two men are being prosecuted, prosecutor Escobar was handling cases related to drug trafficking and hired assassins.
One of the most notorious cases he was in charge of was the hitman of Jaime Fernando Villagómez Fayad, a 32-year-old man who was murdered on May 20, 2022 in a restaurant in Samborondón, in Guayas, for which a man is being prosecuted. .
The official also worked on the murder of journalist Fausto Valdivieso in April 2013, who was the victim of a firearm attack in the La Atarazana citadel in Guayaquil.
During 2022, prosecutor Escobar prosecuted eight suspected drug traffickers who sent drug shipments abroad.
In addition, he led various raids carried out in Guayas on July 20, in which more than 200 packages of drugs were seized.
