The deputies of the UDI Bench representing Ñuble, Marta Bravo and Cristóbal Martínez, called on the Government – specifically the Undersecretariat for Crime Prevention – to implement the “Somos Barrio” program in all the communes of the region, considering that this There have already been six homicides this year, in circumstances where last year there were a total of twelve cases.
In this regard, and along with expressing their concern regarding the repeated events that have been recorded in the area – the latest of them in Chillán, Coihueco and Coelemu -, the parliamentarians warned that if the same trend continues, this year’s homicides might even double those of 2023.
For this reason, and following the various conversations they have had with residents of the region, who recognized an increase in their feeling of insecurity as a result of incivilities and other crimes to which they were not accustomed, deputies Bravo and Martínez requested to extend said program to the rest of the communes of Ñuble -Chillán is already incorporated-, since its objective is precisely to improve the quality of life of people and reduce the levels of victimization and violence, guaranteeing a greater presence of the State through the police.
“If the Government continues to stand idly by and does not decide to confront delinquency and organized crime appropriately, it is very likely that the homicides recorded this year in Ñuble will double those of last year. It is absolutely worrying that only during the first months of 2024 we have already had six cases, while throughout 2023 there were 12 in the region. And it is not regarding generating any type of alarm in the area, but simply warning that we are going in that direction, as we have seen in recent weeks,” the UDI deputies questioned.
Regarding the program in question, which replaced the “Priority Neighborhoods” plan, the representatives of District 19 explained that its purpose is to determine the sectors that present the greatest conditions of socio-criminal vulnerability, lack of security and prevention, in order to invest there. in improving public lighting and the acquisition of community alarms, being able to recover public spaces that are taken over and, by the way, increasing controls.
Precisely, deputies Bravo and Martínez recalled that last year they insistently requested that the “Streets without Violence” plan also be extended to the entire region, as a way to prevent a scenario like the one that Ñuble is currently experiencing from occurring.
“We have been very reiterative in warning that if we do not take measures right now, it is likely that our region will end up losing the tranquility and security that it enjoyed until a few years ago. As in other matters, in security we are the last to receive any type of help, and that is why we need the Government to stop postponing Ñuble and worry regarding the situation we are experiencing, which has been demonstrated with the repeated homicides “, the UDIs insisted.
