The municipality of Fredonia, in southwest Antioquia, is about to revive a tradition that had been absent for two decades: its livestock fair.

With the proposal to condition the old Bullring as a space dedicated to the auction and exhibition of livestock, the community, for its part, is excited about the reactivation of an event that could boost the local economy and strengthen its cultural heritage.

The livestock show in Fredonia was suspended 20 years ago due to regulations that restricted its holding. However, the desire to recover this activity has motivated the authorities and residents to promote the refurbishment of the Torreones Bullring.

This place, which for years was an architectural icon of the region, will be transformed into a space that will not only preserve its history, but also offer significant economic opportunities.

Economic and cultural benefits

The idea of using the bullring as a livestock auction center has been well received by the community. The inhabitants of Fredonia believe that this initiative will generate immediate benefits for local commerce and will attract tourists, vital for the development of different economic sectors. “The reactivation of the plaza would be excellent for our community. It will bring very good tourists and will benefit all the unions,” said a local merchant.

The project seeks to preserve the architecture of the place, highlighting its historical value while adapting to current needs. With a capacity of approximately 30,000 head of cattle in the municipality, it is estimated that about 70 head of cattle could be auctioned each month, which would represent a considerable boost for local producers.

A space for tradition

The old bullring, which has been disused for years, will become a reference not only for livestock, but also for local culture. The idea of having a space that hosts livestock fairs and auctions will allow producers in the region to exhibit their livestock and establish important business connections.

This change also aligns with a growing interest in revitalizing heritage spaces throughout Colombia. Preserving the plaza’s historic architecture is critical, as it not only represents Fredonia’s cultural identity, but also promotes a sense of community among its residents.
