In its ordinary session No. 132, the Regional Council of Ñuble approved by absolute majority the resources for carrying out the project “Transfer for the Promotion of Irrigation”, an initiative presented by the National Irrigation Commission of Ñuble (CNR). The program considers $5.6 billion to deliver a water efficiency solution to 2,500 farmers in the region, through the execution of necessary irrigation works on each property.
The Regional Governor of Ñuble, Óscar Crisóstomo, highlighted the approval of the resources, which will directly benefit peasant family farming, and mentioned that “today we have reaffirmed the commitment we have to agriculture in Ñuble, that is why the agreement that we have approved of $5.6 billion allows us to increase the number of productive hectares in our region and with that also support a group of farmers, particularly small family farmers, better known as Los Blancos in the sectors of San Ignacio, Bulnes, so that they can have resources and allow them to carry out irrigation works that are tremendously relevant. With this we enhance agriculture, improve the economy of the sector and generate food not only for our region, but we also feed Chile.”
On the other hand, the president of the Agriculture and Water Resources Commission, Counselor Rodrigo Denmark, referred to the different benefits that this initiative will provide thanks to the approval of the CORE, and pointed out that “this would be a second stage of a project important that began to be carried out in 2018 onwards, where in a first stage we delivered to the Ministry of Agriculture, to the CNR, $4.5 billion, and in this second period $5.6 billion will be delivered, which is destined for works such as lining canals , works that support water communities that are communal; “They are intended to improve irrigation efficiency, which has to do with technical irrigation systems for different crops and for farmers, specifically, small and medium-sized agriculture.”
Support for farmers
Likewise, Jorge Muñoz, coordinator of the Ñuble National Irrigation Commission, shared his joy at the result of the vote and stated that “for us it is excellent news, we are very willing to work together to be able to support both civil works, mainly those that were destroyed by the storms of 2023, as well as generating new project portfolios for its resources.”
Finally, the Seremi of Agriculture, Antonio Arriagada, emphasized the reinforcement that this important approval means, and added that “this is a second agreement that is highly anticipated by the region, it will help us a lot to recover the lost irrigation infrastructure, to incorporate new farmers to change their reality, from dry land to irrigation, as well as improve a series of minor canals.”
It should be noted that this project will last 36 months.
