Thessaly: Thousands of crops and infrastructure remain under water – 2024-03-07 07:37:39

Six months after the devastating floods caused in Thessaly by the bad weather Daniel, thousands of crops and agricultural infrastructure are still under water and other transportable materials.

The farmers of the area are in despair, they talk about absolute disaster, in OPEN and Antonis Tsolnaras, and they see their lives sinking in the mud left behind by the extreme weather and flooding phenomena.

“The picture is dramatic, let the government take this into account and do something, because tomorrow we will not exist… Simply” stressed Kostas Bichtas.

The residents of Megala Kalyvia are in danger

Recently, with minimal rain, 20,000 acres of arable land were flooded in the prefecture of Trikala. In Megala Kalyvia, however, the risk is even greater, because in aerial photographs taken by the residents to highlight the problem, it can be seen that the rivers surround the village and in the event of an overflow, 1,800 residents will have no way to escape.

“Our village is an island and there is no escape route. I’m very afraid, let’s all make our cross, if this happens again, corpses will float,” Evangelos Karalis, a resident of the village, tells OPEN.

“Let the prime minister come to Larissa”

At the same time, the government’s announcement that the meeting of the prime minister with the farmers on March 11, will take place at Megaros Maximos, has caused reactions.

“The problem is in the Thessalian plain, the largest production plain in Greece has been destroyed and we ask and demand the prime minister to come to Larissa” said Pavlos Spyropoulos.

“We ask him to come here to see the problems in a real place and time to see the magnitude of the problems” the farmer, Thanasis Nikolos.

They are asking the State for solutions both for the shielding of the area and for the high cost of production, so that they can return to their fields.

Tomorrow the presentation of the plan for the anti-flood protection

The master plan for the flood protection of Thessaly will be presented tomorrow to the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, by the heads of the Dutch company HVA International.

The project has been submitted to the prime minister since last Wednesday and, as the managing director of the company Miltiadis Gouzouris told the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, “tomorrow it will be presented to the prime minister”.

In Thessaly’s armoring plan, among other things, actions to strengthen dikes, dams, special proposals such as the one to avoid future floods in Lake Karla, the protection of cities from water in cases of severe weather and others are described. All proposals are accompanied by the respective schedules and cost estimates. “Also, a strategic plan for agricultural production, livestock breeding and the related industry is included, while various measures and actions that will benefit the region are included,” said Mr. Gouzouris.

Suggestions for each region

The plan is divided into individual sections. “We deal with each region separately, such as the cities of Karditsa, Trikala, Larissa, the mountainous regions and also Lake Karla.” There are specific proposals for each region, but this does not mean that they are individual proposals: all plans are connected to each other” noted the head of the Dutch company.

However, as he mentioned speaking to APE-MPE, in order for the plan to succeed there must be consensus from everyone. “From our experience in similar projects, when projects of this scope and size are announced, objections arise from various sides and at all levels: from mayors to ministers and from local to national level” he said and concluded “but what we should have all keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is the protection, benefit and healthy development of the region as a whole. In every change, many sides are affected, some more and others less, positively or negatively, but in the end and in the long run, the aim is to benefit everyone”.
