The two young men accused of the death of the Cypriot fan of PAOK, Nasos Konstantinos, in 2017 were sentenced to five years and three months in prison by the Mixed Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki.
The court found the 26-year-old and the 27-year-old guilty of fatal exposure with possible intent to complicity in the death of Nasos Constantinos, while they were given the mitigating factor of subsequent good behavior.
One was “present” in the courtroom while the second was tried through his attorney.
It is recalled that the two individuals were sentenced for the death of 24-year-old Nasos Konstantinou, who in April 2017, being chased by a group of hooligans on Agios Dimitriou Street in Thessaloniki, was forced to enter the street, was hit by a passing car and died a few days later.
Announcing the decision of the judges, regulars and jurors, the president of the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal, stood in the testimony of the eyewitness of the incident and a friend of Nasos, who had identified the two defendants during the preliminary investigation. “His testimony was reliable and his identifications were ultimately correct,” he said, stressing that the perpetrators surrounded Nasos and his group.
Earlier, the district attorney had requested their conviction, pointing out among other things that the victims “were led to flee from the safe position of the sidewalk to the unsafe position of the roadway […] Where would people go? To sit and eat wood? The most “reasonable” thing they thought was to move towards the road surface”.
The two convicts also denied through their lawyers their involvement in the incident, stating that they were in other places at the time in question.
The Chronicles
It was April 27, 2017, when the 24-year-old and his three friends were returning from the Toumba stadium where they watched PAOK’s match once morest Panathinaikos for the semi-finals of the Greek Cup. At the height of the School of Dentistry of the AUTH, the group of young Cypriots was attacked by hooded men who, according to the victims, were holding iron bars, iron fists and sticks. The two caught up and escaped, but not Nasos and his friend (eyewitness) who moved towards the roadway.
In his attempt to escape, the 24-year-old tried to cross Agios Dimitriou Street vertically but was dragged by a passing vehicle (the driver was acquitted). He was treated for severe head injuries and on May 4 he succumbed to his injuries, losing his battle for life. His friend who testified at the Court of Appeal was hit on the head with bare hands, but his life was not in danger.
At first instance, the two defendants were sentenced to 9 years and 8 months in prison, but were released on parole pending the appeal.
