Over the course of 2023, 5G technology continued its unstoppable advancement, directly impacting the preferences of mobile phone users in Chile. According to analysis by Movistar and WOM, trends indicate that phones compatible with 5G networks topped the sales charts.
In particular, Movistar highlighted the growing demand for cell phones with greater memory capacities, advanced cameras and long-lasting batteries. Alberto Vásquez, the company’s Terminal Manager, emphasized that customers showed a preference for devices with large screens, memories greater than 128GB and fast charging capacity.

A determining factor in this panorama is the significant decrease in the prices of 5G smartphones. While in 2021 its average value was around $400,000, by 2023 a reduction to less than $150,000 is observed. This price change is reflected in the list of the 10 cell phones best sellers of the year, where models such as the iPhone 13 128GB, Motorola Moto G54 5G, Xiaomi Redmi 12 5G, Samsung Galaxy A14 5G, iPhone 15 Pro Max, Motorola Edge 40, Samsung Galaxy A34 5G, Vivo Y27 5G, Honor X8A stand out 5G and Xiaomi Redmi 12C. From Movistar they clarify that the order does not represent a specific ranking.
In this dynamic market, there is also a change in the purchasing habits of phones, with an increase in preference for smart purchasing programs and green products. Likewise, the inclination towards recognized brands, such as Apple, stands out, with many users choosing to update their devices annually.
On the other hand, WOM shared its own ranking of the cell phones best sellers in 2023. Models such as Xiaomi Redmi 10 5G, Motorola Moto G53 5G and Samsung Galaxy A14 5G topped the list. The operator reports notable growth in the adoption of the 5G network, with more than 3.1 million active connections in the last 12 months and more than 55% of the total traffic on its network belonging to 5G technology. Niklas Lind, CMO of WOM, highlights that more than 60% of its customers are upgrading their equipment for 5G-compatible models.
