These ultra-light glasses for augmented reality project a giant screen

The Chinese manufacturer Rokid has just launched a new pair of extremely light glasses for augmented reality. Called Rokid Max, they allow the content of its devices to be displayed on a giant virtual screen.

Halfway between classic augmented reality headsets, such as Microsoft HoloLens, and connected glasses like those of Snapchat, here is a range of glasses in full expansion. They do not display a complete immersive world, but rather a large virtual screen. The manufacturer Rokid has just launched a new pair of augmented reality glasses that are reminiscent of Xiaomi’s Wireless AR Glass Discovery, announced in February. However, at only 75 grams ( once morest 126 grams for those from Xiaomi), the Roxid Max are much lighter.

The glasses incorporate two Full HD micro-Oled panels (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) with a refresh rate of 120 hertz. Combined, they project a 215-inch (5.46 meter) display from a virtual distance of six meters. Rokid advertises a 50 degree field of view and 600 nits brightness. The glasses have no storage or battery, and therefore must be plugged into USB-C on another device, such as a PC, tablet, smartphone or console.

An adjustable diopter

They’re designed for watching content on the big screen no matter where you are. This allows, for example, to play on the console without monopolizing the television, to watch a film from your smartphone on the train, or to work without being limited to your PC screen. The Roxid Max are equipped with a tracking system (with three degrees of freedom), which is however only compatible with certain Android mobile devices and not yet available on PC.

The glasses incorporate diopter adjustment from 0.00 to -6.00, which allows people with myopia to use them without the need for contact lenses. Finally, they are equipped with a switch that allows you to switch between 2D and 3D, for example to watch movies in 3D. The glasses are available for pre-order on the manufacturer’s website at a price of 439 dollars (400 euros), which increases to 546 dollars (498 euros) including customs fees and delivery for France.
