These trends will mark cybersecurity in 2024

Artificial intelligence is making its mark in the field of cybersecurity. It is not only the origin of new kinds of attacks, it also helps CISOs. Other trends should mark 2024 in terms of IT security, according to predictions from different providers.

What cybersecurity issues will occupy CISOs in 2024? What are the dominant attacks and what means can be used to counter them? Several companies, including Kaspersky, G Data and Arctic Wolf, have recently published their forecasts.

AI is everywhere

Not surprisingly, various experts see artificial intelligence (AI) in their crystal balls. Increasingly powerful AI tools are playing into the hands of cybercriminals, explains Arctic Wolf. Thanks to the sophisticated creation of individual and personalized emails in the victims’ native language, phishing emails appear even more authentic. The integration of deepfakes into video conferences or during fraudulent phone calls is also on the rise and will be used more and more widely in the future.

G Data believes that the user will have to put in more effort: it will not only take more time, but also more knowledge to detect manipulations.

However, AI is also being relied upon for cyber protection measures, explains Pagerduty. Technology allows businesses to be proactive and protect themselves and their data once morest increasingly complex threats. “Employees who must react as quickly as possible to an IT incident under pressure are helped to make the right decisions. With the appropriate tools, security processes can be completely reorganized and the number of human errors when reacting to new IT incidents can be reduced,” the company writes.

Simultaneous extortions

When it comes to ransomware, G Data predicts that the amount of damage is expected to increase. Indeed, professionalization and the resulting division of labor within criminal groups lead to more double-exploitation attacks. In this case, two groups of cybercriminals are blackmailing a company at the same time. While one group demands a ransom for not publishing the recovered data, another group demands money for decryption of the data.

Pagerduty expects attacks to be few in number in 2024, but large-scale and sensational: “Unlike the random Spray-and-Pray attacks that once caused great fear, malicious actors will concentrate in the future more and more their attention on sophisticated campaigns. Their objective being to attack high-profile, high-quality targets that are more financially lucrative for them.”

In its recent predictions, Kaspersky also lists cyberattacks linked to geopolitical conflicts. As well as hacking as a service, a trend which might mark the coming months with the probable multiplication of hacking for hire offers.
