With their unique metal structure, inspired by NASA vehicles, Smart Tire Company’s puncture-proof tires are intriguing. They are now available for pre-order, both for bicycles and electric scooters.
The wheels are the only point connecting your electric bike and the ground. It is normal that tires are a crucial point of attention, where technologies are not limited to an inner tube (or tubular). In recent months, double-walled anti-puncture solutions, or without air as on the latest Acer ebii, have emerged in order to reduce the risks. Even stronger, a project offers a completely original puncture-proof tire: the Metl.
Puncture-proof tires with Martian technology
It is the American startup Smart Tire Company which created these new types of tires. The principle is actually simple, the structure is a sort of deformable metal spring running around the rim, flexible enough for comfort and to cushion imperfections in the road. The whole thing is covered with a transparent, slightly flexible rubber-type plastic.
Car Smart Tire Company was inspired by the tire projects it is developing for NASA modules on Mars, compatible with extreme temperatures. The firm therefore took up the idea of deformation with shape memory, using a “NiTinol” material, an alloy of nickel and titanium.
This design targets all areas of mobility, with of course bicycles, scooters and electric scooters at the forefront, but also cars, trucks, even planes! For these land vehicles, Melt tires adopt a thin strip of grooved rubber, to guarantee a certain grip at all times. The promise is incredible, since it can last the life of the electric scooter or bike (more concretely between 10 and 16,000 km). The rubber strip should last approximately 10,000 km.
Bicycle tires at only €470 per pair!
I have personally seen these tires at various exhibitions, precisely in order to promote themselves and attract investors. The latter do not seem to have rushed to the gate, apart from Hyundai-Kia wishing to test the technology, because the company chose crowdfunding to get started.

Smart Tire Company’s puncture-proof tires are now arriving on the market. plateforme Kickstarter, opening pre-orders. You can now invest 150 dollars (€142) in a pair of Metl 8.5-inch tires for electric scooters. An unusual size where most machines are now 10 inches. Second offer, pairs of tires for road or gravel bikes are 500 dollars (€471). They are available in sizes 700x32C, 700x35C and 700x38C.
The operation seems to be working, since Smart Tire Company raised nearly €135,000 compared to the expected €23,500! Building on this success, deliveries planned for June 2024 will probably be ensured, all over the world, including France.
