Caitriona and Eoghan, a 36-year-old Irish couple, had organized their trip to the Gironde capital for the Rugby World Cup. But their dinner at the “Tchin Tchin Wine bar” on September 10, where they will share a jar of poorly sterilized sardines, will turn their stay into a nightmare.

“They came to have a good time and they almost lost their lives,” summarizes their lawyer Pierre Debuisson who announces that a complaint has been filed once morest the restaurant for “deception”, “administration of harmful substances”, “marketing of dangerous foodstuffs”. for health”, “endangering the lives of others” and “unintentional injuries”. Fifteen cases of food botulism have been recorded in connection with the sardines served in this Bordeaux restaurant, and a young woman died.

Helicoptered from Lacanau

The day following their dinner at the “Tchin Tchin Wine bar” violent symptoms assailed Eoghan, who ate with more appetite than his companion, while they were in Lacanau. He feels dizzy, his vision becomes blurred and he feels overcome by extreme fatigue. Her friend, panicked, found help at a pharmacy which put her in contact with a doctor. Alerted by the signs, in the known context of collective botulism poisoning, the Samu sent a helicopter.

At Pellegrin hospital, “he was immediately intubated and placed in a coma,” says his counsel. His doctors told his partner that they had almost lost him. » As he was regarding to suffocate, they performed an emergency tracheotomy. “He was placed in intensive care following the coma, which lasted for weeks,” adds Pierre Debuisson. He suffered from vision and balance problems, found himself unable to walk, and had difficulty breathing or swallowing. His partner suffered from the same symptoms but to a lesser degree, in particular because she had consumed fewer sardines.

Still far from having a normal life

More than two months following the events, Eoghan has just been released from hospital in Cork, Ireland, and neither of the two thirty-year-olds has been able to return to normal professional activity following contracting this serious neurological condition. They still suffer from physical following-effects today: they have low blood pressure, are victims of dizziness, vertigo, digestive and pulmonary problems. They also have to deal with memory problems, concentration problems and the feeling of “being foggy,” reports their lawyer. This also highlights a “strong loss of anxiety” following this mishap which might have cost them their lives. They obviously no longer go to restaurants but also check the composition of everything they ingest, clean more than necessary and are victims of nighttime anxiety.

“They came close to death but today there is still no investigating judge appointed to the Bordeaux judicial court,” their council is indignant. This is an aberration because only an investigating judge has the possibility of carrying out all the necessary investigations to understand the chain of events which led to this tragedy. » The couple was not heard as part of the investigation and feels abandoned by French justice.
