Even though Ford is accustomed to mass production cars, the manufacturer hides an ultra-limited series of stainless steel models.

Ford is not a manufacturer known for its limited production of luxury models. As one of the largest car producers in the world, the American company is more accustomed to mass production. A few exceptions still exist in Ford’s history.

This is particularly the case with a collection of models designed in stainless steel. They are so rare that only eleven have been produced over several decades. The very first was made in 1936. It was a Deluxe Sedan whose body was entirely built with this material.

Extremely rare Fords built in stainless steel

At the time, Ford’s goal was to demonstrate great durability stainless steel. It is with this strategy in view that the manufacturer released a Deluxe Sedan designed with this metal. At the time, the American company approached a steel producer located in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Ludlum Steel.

In 1936, a total of six stainless steel Fords were built in conjunction with Allegheny Ludlum Steel. Of these first six models, only four have survived until today. They were all equipped with a V8 engine of 85 horsepower. Until 1946, they were driven by the manufacturer’s best sellers every year.

A reminder of Ford’s history

After this first production in 1936, Ford and Allegheny Ludlum Steel built two more, including one Thunderbirdin 1960. Three Lincoln Continental Convertibles were then produced. This very limited series of Ford in stainless steel eventually fell into oblivion until 2020, when three copies were sold at auction.

They had been offered for sale without an estimate. Three copies are also kept in the Crawford Auto Museum. One of these three models is one of the Sedan produced in 1936. The other two are a 1960 Ford Thunderbird and a 1967 Lincoln Continental. t a time when innovation was particularly dynamic in the American automotive industry.
