As the school year draws to a close, it’s time to choose the next vacation destination. Fine sand, azure sky and coconut trees, etc. the postcard is perfect. But, the reality can also turn into a nightmare for some travelers.

The Forbes site has ranked the destinations where it is more common to be sick. To establish this ranking, experts analyzed 2.4 million messages posted on travel forums with the keywords “salmonella”, “gastroenteritis”, “e-coli” and “food poisoning”. These data were cross-referenced with the vaccines recommended by the American authorities and the areas where it is not recommended to drink tap water. Thanks to this, it was possible to develop the Forbes Advisor Travel Bug Index.

Red card for Benidorm

What are the five global destinations where travelers are most likely to get sick? In first place… Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, with a score of 90.4/100. Nearly 10% of travel forum users complain of illnesses contracted while on vacation. Then comes Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt with a score of 83.5. The other three places are occupied by Sal in Cape Verde with a score of 70.6 then Playa del Carmen and Cabo San Lucas (two cities in Mexico).

Forbes magazine has also established a top five European destinations where travelers are also most likely to fall ill. Who’s in the lead? It is Benidorm, in Spain which obtains the score of 26.4/100. Of the 52,000 messages collected on travel forums, 4.5% of internet users complained of food poisoning and other illnesses. At the European level, London in the United Kingdom collects a rating of 21.7. The third place is occupied by Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. Paris ranks fourth with a score of 19.4.
