These bad habits that damage our brain

Seat of our thoughts, our emotions, master of our movements, the brain is a very special organ.

When we are under stress, we secrete cortisol. When this state of stress is prolonged and repeated, the body falters and, first of all, the brain, indicates the federation for brain research (FRC). Weakened by stress, the membrane that protects the brain will allow inflammatory proteins to pass from the body to the brain1 … Result ? The hippocampus (seat of memory and emotions) is weakened and might even experience a dysfunction. The more tense we are, the more our brain is intoxicated, and the more we can lose our memory…

Is loneliness bad for the brain?

Did you know ? Being alone at home too often might have bad consequences on the brain! Although additional studies should validate these results, in 2019, a study2 conducted with 9 scientists on an expedition to the Antarctic for 14 months has enabled researchers to conclude that social isolation and a monotonous environment might have a negative impact on the production of neurons and reduce the volume of gray matter in certain areas .

No need to panic if you are more of a homebody type: such an impact would only be observed following a year spent alone at home and this does not apply if you are in regular contact with others.

Junk food is bad for your health. Until now, nothing new. But many studies have looked at the impact of a diet that is too rich, too fatty, too sweet on the brain. What comes out of it? Processed dishes and ultra-processed foods are ultra harmful to our brain. Alteration of the hippocampus3memory loss, link with the development of Alzheimer’s disease …

Lack of sleep and brain health

According to the latest figures, an adult would sleep on average 6h42 per night. This is little. Especially since, to be in good shape, it is recommended that an adult sleep at least 7 hours. Admittedly, this allows you to be in shape… but also to have a brain on top! For what ? Quite simply because it is during our sleep that our brain evacuates its waste! Admittedly, in terms of sleep, needs vary from one person to another, but too short a night does not allow the brain to regenerate properly.

Sedentary lifestyle, enemy of the brain

Practicing a physical activity, we know that it is essential to have a healthy lifestyle. But sport is also good for the brain! Physical activity will indeed stimulate the formation of new blood vessels in the brain, and therefore the birth of new neurons. Logically, this increases the volume of the hippocampus (seat of memory and emotions) as well as that of gray matter! Whether we’re walking, yoga, cycling, running or hiking, it doesn’t matter as long as we’re moving!
