They all died prematurely at 27

The club of 27 sadly brings together musicians, singers and actors who died prematurely, at the age of just 27. This list is unofficial and has no scientific basis, but is of concern to many artists. Robert Smith (The Cure) even declared that “the death of these stars at the age of 27 really changed the way of looking at rock”, on National Public Radio. Kurt Cobain

February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994. The lead singer of legendary band Nirvana was the leader of Generation X, even though he refused the label. His fame bothered and frustrated him because the message of his songs was not interpreted as he intended. Evidenced by the song ‘I Hate Myself and Want to Die’. His name is one of the five original members of the Club des 27.

Jonathan Brandis

April 13, 1976 – November 12, 2003. By the age of five he had already starred in television commercials. At 14, he landed his first role in ‘The Neverending Story 2: A New Chapter’. And at 17, he became a world star thanks to ‘SeaQuest, police of the seas’, which earned him around 4,000 fan letters a week. But his star gradually ceased to shine and, at the end of the 1990s, he was only given secondary roles. His last role in ‘Mission Escape’ was completely eliminated during the editing and, according to those close to him, it was fatal to him given his fragile state. He was found dead at his home in Los Angeles.

Jim Morrison

December 8, 1943 – July 3, 1971. “True to himself”: the epitaph written in Greek which appears on Jim Morrison’s grave in Paris, has become legendary. Just like the Doors singer, of course. According to the autopsy, he died in the bathtub of his apartment in the Marais district of Paris, following a cardiac arrest. However, some evoke an overdose, even a conspiracy of which he would have been the victim, and which was intended to finish him off.

Janis Joplin

January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970. On stage, Janis Joplin was a force of nature. Inspired by blues divas such as Billie Holiday, Big Mama Thornton or Ma Rainey, she triumphed in memorable concerts in Woodstock, Monterrey or in Canada. But the problem is that, when she got off stage, she kept this ardor with her addictions. Substances have, in fact, accompanied her all her life, until killing her the night of October 4, 1970, in her house in Los Angeles. She is one of the five original members of the mythical ‘Club des 27’.

Jimi Hendrix

November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970. Considered one of the best rock guitarists in history, Jimi Hendrix had a musical career spanning only four years. That was enough for him to make history and alienate the music industry. During the last days of his life, Jimi Hendrix fought several battles: a dispute with his production company, problems with his manager, the departure of his bassist Billy Cox, and a newborn baby which contributed to his insomnia. On September 18, 1970, he multiplied the recommended dose of sleeping pills by seven and mixed it with wine. Unconscious, he dies of suffocation from his vomit.

Brian Jones

February 28, 1942 – July 3, 1969. Bill Wyman said of Brian Jones: “He formed the group, chose the members and the name, the music, found gigs…”. The legendary ‘Rolling Stones’ would certainly not exist without Brian Jones. But when the band went a little more pop, the guitarist got frustrated because he was a pure rocker. This change plunged him into addiction and depression which eventually led him to leave the band. Less than a month from his departure from the Rolling Stones, he had an asthma attack while bathing in his swimming pool. But there has always been speculation that his death was deemed suspicious, including in ‘Stoned’, the film regarding his life where the assassination is clearly hinted at. He is an original member of the ‘Club des 27’.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988. The successful artist of African-American art created enormously, and died young and handsome. He has been in a relationship with Andy Warhol, Madonna… And, despite his very young age, has made more than 40 exhibitions in Paris or New York. He was a genius at self-promotion. But his addictions got the better of him. After a detox treatment in Hawaii, in July 1988, he returned to New York convinced of being cured. But on August 12, 1988, he died of an overdose.

Kim Jong Hyun

April 8, 1990 – December 18, 2017. Known as Jonghyun, he has been one of the great South Korean musical phenomena of recent times. Singer of the boy band SHINee for nine years, he decided to try a solo career in 2015. Two years later, he was found dead in an apartment in Seoul, following a cardiac arrest.

Fred Santana

July 4, 1990 – January 19, 2018. Fredo Santana was a rising trap star, and his debut album ‘Trappin’ Ain’t Dead’ (2013) exploded in sales. Unfortunately, the singer was addicted to a home-made cough syrup that was sure to be harmful and caused both kidney and heart problems. He himself admitted on social networks, a few months before dying, that he “didn’t even wish it on his worst enemy”, in reference to the pain he was suffering from. He died of an epileptic fit caused by kidney failure.

Amy Winehouse

September 14, 1983 – July 23, 2011. One of the most brilliant singers of the 21st century has had her ups and downs. Authorities found Amy Winehouse dead in her flat in Camden, London, and an autopsy three months later found the cause of death to be excessive vodka. His blood alcohol level was 416 mg, while the vital limit, according to the medical examiner, is 350 mg.

Harry Hains

December 4, 1992 – January 7, 2020. Harry Hains’ career was starting to take off. Roles in ‘American Horror Story’, ‘Sneaky Pete’ or ‘The OA’ helped him shed the cumbersome label of Jane Badler’s son. Before that, this youngster worked as a model and a musician. And it was his mother, Jane Badler, who announced his death on Instagram. The actress did not hide that her son had been struggling for several years once morest “his mental illnesses and his addictions”. It was these that caused his death.

Anton Yelchin

March 11, 1989 – June 19, 2016. One of Hollywood’s rising young stars suffered one of the 27 Club’s most bizarre (or absurd) deaths. It took place at his Studio City home, in California. According to the investigation, Anton Yelchin would have parked in front of his house without putting on the handbrake and the vehicle would have pinned him between a pillar and the security barrier. The official cause of death was “confused traumatic asphyxia”.

Pete de Freitas

August 2, 1961 – June 14, 1989. Pete de Freitas was the drummer for British rock band Echo and the Bunnymen in the 1980s. Sadly, a year following the birth of his daughter, he died in a tragic motorbike accident on the road of Liverpool.

Ron “Pigpen” McKernan

September 8, 1945 – March 8, 1973. Ronald “Pigpen” McKernan was the founding member of the American rock band Grateful Dead. He was both the singer of the group and also provided the role of musician. He died prematurely following a digestive haemorrhage in his home in Corte Madera, California.

Alan Wilson

July 4, 1943 – September 3, 1970. He was the leader and co-founder of the Canned Heat, a blues band from Los Angeles. Alan Wilson notably participated in the legendary Woodstock festival in 1969, a year before his death, which will be caused by an overdose. His lifeless body was found in September 1970 in his sleeping bag in the Santa Monica Mountains. An active ecologist, he liked to spend his nights in the middle of nature, alone.
