Public Health PRACTITIONER Ngabila Salama shares tips for safe and healthy exercise while fasting during the month of Ramadan.
Ngabila said that someone who is fasting is advised to remain physically active or do light exercise to keep their body fit.
“Exercise should not be too sweaty. The important thing is that we only sweat lightly, don’t let our sports clothes be so full of sweat that they get so wet,” said Ngabila, quoted Monday (11/3)
He explained that someone who fasts during the month of Ramadan for a whole month will experience changes in their body’s metabolism due to changes in eating, drinking and resting times.
Therefore, he appealed to the public to maintain controlled physical activity so that fasting is not disturbed.
According to him, a person can exercise for around 20 to 30 minutes, at low intensity, and it is recommended to do it indoors.

The best time for light physical activity is from before sunrise to midday to avoid dehydration.
“Just do light exercise to avoid dehydration due to excessive sweating. The important thing is that we get the effect of the endorphin hormone, the pleasant effect of exercise,” he said.
The alumni of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) then said that someone who wants to start exercising is advised to do so following breaking the fast.

This is because energy has been replenished by food and drink when breaking the fast so it is relatively safe to do moderate exercise.
Some types of exercise that are recommended to be done while fasting are fast walking or an indoor stationary bike at a moderate level.
The Head of the Medical Services Section at Tamansari Hospital, Jakarta, also appealed to the public not to force themselves to do strenuous exercise, especially for someone who continues to work while fasting.
“Physical activity is not always exercise, the important thing is movement. It can be stretching between
work or walking around 6,000 to 8,000 steps,” he concluded. (Ant/Z-1)
