Reinstatement of the 5-day suspension and easier permanent suspension from school are included in the severe penalties promoted by theDepartment of Education as a barrier to the increase in bullying incidents.
The measures presented today by the newspaper “Kathimerini” will be officially announced in March and will take effect immediately. In this context, protocols are drawn up to deal with incidents of intra-school violence, at the same time that teachers are vulnerable to the pressures of abusing parents. The “broken” children – in cases of disasters at school – will be paid by the parents.
Also, children will be able to address social workers within school without having the relative consent of their parents, as is currently the case. Within the month, a national campaign is expected to “run” with the participation of the Ministry of Education and other involved ministries and public bodies.
The main axes
Through ministerial decisions it will be established: a) the tightening of penalties by reinstating the 5-day expulsion, b) the procedures will be accelerated so that the teachers’ association can more easily expel a student and c) the separation of excused and unjustified absences will be reinstated.
It is considered necessary to draw up protocols to deal with incidents of intra-school violence, at the same time that teachers are vulnerable to the pressures of abusive parents. Parents will be asked to take responsibility for their children’s actions at school.
The children they will be able to address the problems that concern them within the school to psychologists and social workers, without having the relative consent of parents.
There will be campaign of national scope ordered by the Prime Minister, with the participation of the Ministry of Education and other involved ministries and public bodies. The campaign will transmit the messages to eliminate the phenomenon to all social groups involved: students – teachers, professors and parents.
One of the central messages of the campaign will be to encourage students who experience bullying to speak up and “report” the incidents. And this will happen through a reference to the platform of the Ministry of Education that will be posted and put into operation.
