The new research looked at the rate of burglaries per 100,000 inhabitants and the security index (which represents the level of security in each location) in 21 European countries. The locations were then ranked according to their susceptibility to break-ins.

In an interesting twist, Sweden, known as the home of flatpack furniture, has been revealed as the country with the most burglaries in Europe. With an impressive theft rate of 657.2 per 100,000 inhabitants and a security index of 51.7, Sweden leads the continent with an overall score of 1.779 out of 2. France is in second place with a theft rate of 458.4 and a security index of 44.7, with total score 1.640 out of 2.

Belgium, known for its luxury chocolates, ranks third in Europe in burglaries. With a theft rate of 408.9 per 100,000 inhabitants and a security index of 50.3, Belgium achieves an overall score of 1.374 out of 2. Meanwhile, the UK also faces a significant number of burglaries, ranking fourth. The UK theft rate is 382.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a security index of 52.2, resulting in an overall score of 1.266 out of 2.

Austria, known for classical music, baroque architecture and winter sports, ranks fifth in Europe in burglaries. Despite having the second highest theft rate on the list at 554.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, Austria has an impressively high safety score of 70.6. This combination gives the alpine country an overall score of 0.997 out of 2.

When it comes to countries with the fewest burglaries, Finland comes out as the safest country in Europe, recording just 104.9 burglaries per 100,000 inhabitants and a safety index of 73.8. The Netherlands is next, with 136.0 burglaries and a security index of 73.6. Slovenia also stands out, with 264.4 burglaries and the highest security index on the list at 76.4.

Methodology:

The dataset ranks 51 locations and compiles 3 separate rankings for Australian cities, EU countries and US cities, based on the number of burglaries. Three different factors were used, two of which were used in the final ranking. After the data were collected for the factors, the data were normalized and each factor was given a score between 0 and 1. If there were no data, a score of 0 was given. The normalized values ​​were added to give each site a total score out of 3 (with a maximum of 2 for the final ranking). Sites were ranked from highest to lowest score, based on total scores.
