these anti-emetics would cause an increased risk of stroke

The alarm bell was pulled by l’Inserm from Bordeaux. Primpéran, Vogalene or Motilium. You all know them. And you take them when you have bouts of gastroenteritis. Yet these nausea medications would not be harmless to your health. Quite the contrary.

The results of a extensive study were published in the British Medical Journal and they are alarming. “To date, no study has been published evaluating the ischemic stroke risk associated with exposure to antidopaminergic antiemetics. These drugs are however used very commonly: in 2017 in France, more than 4 million people had at least one reimbursement for metopimazine, the most used of them”, explained the Inserm researchers. The metopimazine is an antiemetic that is used in the management of nausea and vomiting of various origins.

Increased risks from the first days of treatment

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed data from 2,616 adults who were hospitalized for a first ischemic stroke and who had ingested an antiemetic in the 70 days preceding their accident. “In these subjects, the analyzes found a greater high consumption of antiemetics in the days preceding the stroke marked by a peak in treatment initiation over this period”. In essence, there would be “an increased risk of ischemic stroke at the start of use of these drugs”. This increase would be “two to three times higher” with the intake of domperidone, metoclopramide and metopimazine. Substances chemicals found in almost all anti-emetics.

“This first study provides a strong signalrelating to drugs widely used in the general population. For the time being, it seems very important that these results can be replicated in other studies, studies which might also provide indications on the frequency of this adverse effect, which we might not measure here given the approach methodology adopted. Having precise information on the stroke subtypes ischemic diseases and their localization would also make it possible to explore the mechanisms involved”explained Anne Bénard-Laribière, one of the authors of the study.

If the research still needs to be deepened, it would be customary to prefer more natural solutions once morest nausea. Case to follow.
