The Lebanese Judges Club issued the following statement:
For the government to meet urgently to discuss what it wanted to call a “malfunction” in the work of the judiciary is an unprecedented historical failure that constitutes a flagrant violation of the principle of separation of powers and an insult to the prestige and dignity of the judiciary.
Unfortunately, we are no longer surprised by such behavior, because simply when the reason is known, the wonder is the hero. The reason is that in the logic of politicians, the judiciary must remain small and incapable of holding accountable the corruption that grips all the joints of the state, such as the octopus, and the prisoner of their red lines. Summoning the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Public Prosecutor of Cassation, and the Head of the Judicial Inspection Authority to attend the cabinet session and pressure them to dissuade the judges from performing their duties, and then threaten woe and failure and great matters if that does not happen. More importantly, it did not happen, and perhaps time alone will do justice to undermining the proposal if those involved reveal the details of what happened.
In this context, the Judges Club of Lebanon stresses that every attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary must be repelled, which has been proven by conclusive evidence that it cannot be achieved unless judicial appointments are freed from the grip of the executive authority.
There is no salvation for Lebanon without a free and independent judiciary!
