There is no consideration for India’s permanent NATO membership: Julian Smith

US Ambassador to NATO, Julian Smith, has said that for India, NATO is not currently considering giving permanent membership to the countries in this region.

Julian Smith also discussed China’s growing aggression in the region and how it has affected NATO’s strategy in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The way NATO communicates with its partners in the Indo-Pacific region has changed significantly,” he said in a virtual news briefing.

In the past, NATO did not have a specific agenda with the countries of the region, but in recent years it has begun to approach them.

In response to a question about a new role for India in NATO, he said, “If India is interested, NATO’s doors are open for it, but not to give permanent membership to countries in the Indo-Pacific or Asia-Pacific region.” We are not considering anything about it.

Julian Smith said that ‘NATO is currently a Euro-Atlantic military alliance and has no intention of expanding into a global military alliance’.

Addressing the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels on April 4-5, Julian Smith said that at present we would not like to invite India to the NATO ministerial meeting until we understand its objectives. Don’t know.

However, 4 countries (Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan) which have already established formal partnership with NATO have been invited.

“These are the four countries that joined us at the summit in Madrid last year,” said Julian Smith.
