CATFISH. The most recent five champions of the Central Football Regional League came from Styria – can SPG Wels break this series for the first time this year? After the 2-2 draw in the derby against SPG Wallern/St. Marienkirchen, coach Emin Sulimani’s team failed to push leader ASK Voitsberg (0-1 against Aller Heiligen) from the top of the table.
The club from Styria, which was only promoted to the third highest division in the summer, is probably the Welser’s only remaining promotion rival, because: In addition to SPG Wels and Vorwärts Steyr, Voitsberg was also present at the Bundesliga’s license workshop. While Steyr has already ruled out promotion again and simply wanted to find out about the general conditions by taking part in the workshop, the current league leaders from Styria are seriously interested in the 2nd league. “In the long term we are concerned with the 2nd league,” says Voitsberg section manager Michael Sorko to the OÖN.
Will that be effective this season? “We found out which things we would have to adapt. It’s not just about the infrastructure, we also have to grow in structure.”
If Voitsberg does not apply for admission to the next league this season, second place would be enough for the Sulimani team to gain promotion. But the association from the trade fair city will probably not be given this favor. “Wels certainly won’t get a free pass from us. We also have a direct duel in the last round – maybe there will be a real showdown,” says Sorko.
Wels celebrated at the weekend despite the draw in the derby: President Wolfgang Nöstlinger and chairman Roland Golger also donned their lederhosen for the Oktoberfest – 1,200 spectators brought a folk festival atmosphere to the stadium.
