The National Digital Infrastructure Service is investigating whether the iPhone 12 emits too much radiation. If that is the case, sales of the device may also be stopped in the Netherlands. There is already a temporary sales ban on the iPhone 12 in France.
European regulators are working together to randomly check the radiation from telephones. A test by the French regulator ANFR showed that the iPhone 12 emits too much radiation.
In the Netherlands, the Rijksdienst Digital Infrastructure (RDI) checks whether smartphones meet the radiation standards. The French regulator has informed the RDI regarding its test results, a spokesperson confirmed to NU.nl. “But we will first consult with Apple before we take further steps.”
If the RDI concludes that the iPhone 12 emits too much radiation, sales can also be stopped in the Netherlands. According to the RDI spokesperson, this is not yet an issue.
Sales of the iPhone 12 have been halted in France. Apple has been given a number of weeks by the French regulator to resolve the problem, otherwise a permanent sales ban will follow.
Health risk is zero
Even though the iPhone 12 emits more radiation than permitted, the health risks are nil, according to Monique Beerlage of the Electromagnetic Fields Knowledge Platform. The knowledge platform is a collaboration between, among others, the RIVM, the RDI and the GGD.
According to Beerlage, the requirements in Europe are so strict that a small excess does not cause any health damage. But the standards are there for a reason. These are mainly there to protect people with certain conditions.
Radiation warms up your body
“The radiation from a telephone causes parts of our body to heat up very slightly,” says Beerlage. “This can cause health damage to people who cannot dissipate this heat properly due to a condition.”
Smartphones are in continuous wireless contact with cell towers in the area. The further away an antenna is from you, the louder your device has to transmit to be able to send your telephone call or app. As a result, your phone also emits more radiation.
In Europe, the radiation generated by your phone may not exceed a limit of 2 watts per kilo of body weight. That is the maximum so-called SAR value. “That limit has been established to exclude any risk of health damage,” Beerlage explains.

Limit transmission power with a software update
Apple can probably fix the problems with a software update. The transmission power of the iPhone 12 can be reduced via the software so that the radiation falls within European standards once more.
Beerlage has a good tip for people who are concerned regarding the radiation emitted by their phone. “When calling, put your phone on speaker or use earphones and keep it away from you.” This would significantly reduce the radiation entering your body.
Apple says to news agency AFP that the company doubts ANFR’s test results. The tech giant reports that multiple independent studies have shown that the iPhone meets the standards.
