There is also a problem with electricity – all transport is disrupted

Tragic shortages in Omonia, but also in the tunnels that connect Monastiraki with Attiki, complain the workers of STA.SY.

Photographic documents with a fire extinguisher that has expired and a fire detection system that does not work were released yesterday by the employees of the Stationary Transports (STA.SY.), sending a signal of danger for fire safety at ISAP stations. 24 hours after the revelations by Data Journalists, highlighted by the “democracy”, about the serious safety problems on the new metro line that ends in Piraeus, the fixed transport workers reveal serious fire safety problems on line 1 of the Electric and in particular in the tunnels that they connect Monastiraki with Attiki, but also at the busy Omonia station.

Workers have released photos that confirm their concerns about fire safety deficiencies, while raising 11 key questions:

• Who certifies that the ventilation system at Omonia station is operational and can be operated by the station office or the Operations Control Center?

• What exactly did the technician crew do at the Omonia station that the company was quick to send after our complaints?

• Are employees lying or are some trying to sweep problems under the rug?

• Will the air conditioning that is out of order be available before summer? Was it working last summer? When did it last work?

• At the stations of line 1, is the fire safety system adequate and adapted to modern needs?

• Does the fire detection system work at all stations?

• Is there fire safety certification for all stations?

• Are there procedures in case of an emergency train evacuation within the Monastiraki – Attiki tunnel?

• When was the last safety exercise on Line 1?

• When were the emergency exits last checked?

• Have fire extinguishers been checked for their expiry date?

“We are waiting for answers! And we call the administration of STA.SY. to stop this tactic, to provide solutions to the problems and to defend the safety of transport, because the answer to everything is not… “the station master is to blame”” concludes the announcement of the STA.SY employees.

The reason for the complaint that “burns” the management of the company is the announcement issued a few hours earlier by the management of Fixed Communications, reassuring the passenger public, one day after the statements of the president of the workers on the ISAP line, Panos Kontogiannis, that at the station In Omonia, the ventilation does not work, while there is a risk of people dying from suffocation in the event of a fire.

Management: We will do it…

The administration of STA.SY. he replied that there is a firefighting network to deal with a possible fire, although he admits that the autonomous ventilation systems at the points of connection with lines 2 and 3 of the metro are in the phase of further strengthening.

Regarding the Omonia station, it is reported that a ventilation and air conditioning system has been installed, which is in the process of maintenance, so that it will be available before the summer. Apparently, like… the remote control on the trains would have been ready, but they were overtaken by the deadly collision in Tempe…
