With a positive paper for the first debate already filed, following six months he revived the project in accordance with which the Medellín Mayor’s Office intends to sell the shares which EPM retains in UNE Millicom.
The first debate will take place this Friday at 2:00 pm, as announced this Monday at a meeting of the First Commission, an instance where the first round must be held before going to plenary.
As of May 2021, the EPM Board of Directors authorized the initiation of the necessary procedures for the total disposal of its shareholding in UNE EPM Telecommunications S.A.. and in Inversiones Telco SAS With the result of the sale of the shares of these companies, where EPM is not the controlling company, the company intends to redirect resources so that they become part of its strategic businesses.
The draft agreement was filed on July 26, 2021 and had an intense agenda in his first months in the Council, with at least 12 socialization plenaries between August 9 and October 8. Later there was a confrontation between the councilors and the municipal cabinet, with mutual accusations and accusations.
Of course, in the background the discussion stopped on the way to the first debate because the Mayor’s Office did not have a majority in the First Commission. Of the seven councilors that made it up, three were in the government coalition and four in the opposition, which anticipated the collapse of the project.
Today, six months later, the forces remain even in the commission: three are from the government coalition and three from the opposition. So the one who will tip the balance will be the councilman Simón Pérezwho last December replaced Daniel Carvalho, a staunch opponent of the municipal government.
To all of these, Mayor Daniel Quintero said this Monday that if Millicom extends the clause for the protection of public assets, which expires in August 2024, will withdraw the project. “In another case, the decision is yours alone: sell or lose 2 billion more in UNE,” he said, in response to a trill from Councilman Sebastián López, of the Democratic Center.
This, earlier, had informed the programming of the debate. “With as little noise as possible, they want to approve the sale of UNE in commission 1 of the @ConcejoMedellin; This fundamental issue must be addressed to the citizens and the Mayor @QuinteroCalle is putting pressure on the Council”.
