President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko criticized the country’s sports sector for the lack of results.
“The World Cup is on. I something, Sergey Mikhailovich (Kovalchuk), did not notice our players there. Or am I just bad at watching the World Cup?” — quotes Lukashenko BELTA.
The President of Belarus met on December 14 with the Minister of Sports of the country Sergei Kovalchuk.
“There is not even close. Moreover, I compare the game of our football players with the football that the athletes show there today. And besides, they show these results in the winter time. And as a former footballer who played a lot of football, I just get scared,” Lukashenka added.
The President noted that football in the country is in a terrible state. “And once, when appointing you, I hoped that you, as a military man, who loves sports, who understands it, will turn there. I’m not talking about the Deputy Prime Minister. I don’t see a vice-premier there at all. Not in any social sphere and so on. So what, time has passed, many years (and if it takes two years, you know how many), and where are these results? Lukashenka asked a question.
The Belarusian national team failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, finishing last in the group with the teams of Belgium, Wales, the Czech Republic and Estonia.
