Many banks in Europe and the United States use the voice verification system, and all use the voice verification function to replace the customer’s input of the account password. The advantage is that the verification can be carried out by phone. However, some foreign media tested using the free AI sound generator on the Internet, and the sound effects produced can actually fool this kind of sound verification system.
This time, Lloyds Bank was successfully fooled by the voice verification system. When the bank introduced the voice verification function, it advertised that “VoiceID is similar to fingerprints and analyzes more than 100 voice characteristics, such as the way the mouth and vocal cords are used, Accent, speaking speed, etc.”
The testers of the foreign media “Motherboard” tried to use the iPad to connect to the bank’s voice verification function. The system asked the caller the reason for calling into the banking system, and the tester played the voice “I want to check the account balance” pre-made by the AI artificial intelligence sound production system.
The system normally recognizes this and responds with “OK”. The system then asks the user to enter the date of birth using the numeric keypad, and then asks the user to say the sentence “my voice is my password”. The testers also answered using the voice of the AI generator.
After a few seconds, the system responded with “Thank you, the balance of the bank account is as follows” and read out the balance, the list of recipients of the most recent transfer, and so on.
This test uses the AI sound production service provided by ElevenLabs, which is free and can produce high-precision sounds. Lloyds responded that they had not received any reports of scams related to AI voices. The tester of this test also revealed that his test failed several times at the beginning, and finally he needed to use long articles to train the AI to get the result that fooled the voice verification system. It is difficult for criminals to simply record a few sentences with AI-made sound effects to break through the bank’s voice verification system.
