Former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis spoke about his uncle Konstantinos, in his speech about the book about the patriarch “Konstantinos Karamanlis and Thessaloniki”.
He did not fail, according to newsbeast.gr, to refer to Macedonia saying: “The support, encouragement and funding he provided to Manolis Andronikos for excavations in Vergina and even today Amphipolis are irrefutable proof that the culture of ancient Macedonia is only Greek” .
Especially, regarding our national issues and relations with Turkey, the former prime minister said: “The claim that Konstantinos Karamanlis was ready to enter into an all-out negotiation with Turkey is not true, as it sounds lately. He believed that the only dispute with Turkey, the delimitation of the continental shelf in the Aegean, should be resolved according to International Law, if necessary with recourse to The Hague, on the basis of a co-promissory note. And it was Turkey that backed down then, that is the historical truth. In other words, the claim that Karamanlis was ready to discuss other issues was inaccurate, false and perhaps malicious,” he stressed.
And he continued: “I want to underline that the concerns and reflections expressed about our national issues are reasonable and real. After all, they are created by Turkey’s aggression and revisionism. Their emergence strengthens our fixed national positions, especially when they are expressed by responsible lips and it is wrong to be treated as critical, while the country remains committed to the national line”.
In his speech, the former prime minister also said: “Karamanlis did not only restore democracy, but he gave it solid foundations”, he emphasized, among other things, and emphasized that social justice and cohesion were his prerequisites.
Also, respect for institutions and the separation of powers, human rights, the distinct roles of each power and the security of the citizen. Democracy is respect for laws. Democracy does not flourish where insults, partisan strife, and competition are the primary reason.
Konstantinos Karamanlis never divided the Greeks. He was slandered, slandered and reviled like few, but he never turned political disagreement into a personal confrontation.
“Democratic polity is established in our country, but dangers to democracy lurk and must be addressed before they cause irreparable damage. The widening of social inequalities, the marginalization of large sections of the population pushes a growing number of citizens to abstain and refuse the political process. The system has lost its political legitimacy,” said the former prime minister.
What is happening in many European countries as well as in the USA confirms these concerns.
“They add fuel to the fire,” he said meaningfully, “those who haughtily and arrogantly denigrate the disaffected and protesting as regressive, atomized or extremists.”
Kostas Karamanlis said that it is shocking to reveal that 50% of respondents declare “outside the walls, outside society” and the gap between the haves and have-nots is a bomb in the foundations of society.
The former prime minister also referred to the need to protect Justice and information.
Finally, Mr. Karamanlis referred to the propaganda adopted, especially in wars, such as in the Middle East.

**Interview with Former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Mr. Karamanlis. You recently spoke at an event honoring your uncle, Konstantinos Karamanlis, and the book about his legacy. What were some of the key themes you wanted to address in your speech?
**Kostas Karamanlis:** Thank you for having me. In my speech, I emphasized my uncle’s tremendous contribution to the restoration of democracy in Greece. He didn’t just bring democracy back, but he established solid foundations for it. It’s crucial that we remember the importance of social justice, the separation of powers, and respect for institutions in our democratic process.
**Interviewer:** You touched on the topic of ancient Macedonia and its cultural heritage. Can you elaborate on your stance regarding this issue?
**Kostas Karamanlis:** Certainly. My uncle’s support for archaeological efforts in Macedonia, such as those led by Manolis Andronikos and the discoveries in Vergina and Amphipolis, stands as irrefutable proof that the culture of ancient Macedonia is inherently Greek. This is a topic of national importance and should be understood within the context of our history.
**Interviewer:** In your remarks, you addressed national issues related to Turkey. Can you clarify your uncle’s approach to negotiations with Turkey?
**Kostas Karamanlis:** Yes, it is vital to correct the narrative around this. The assertion that Konstantinos Karamanlis was eager to enter into an all-out negotiation with Turkey is a misconception. He believed in resolving disputes, particularly regarding the delimitation of the continental shelf in the Aegean, through International Law. It is often overlooked that Turkey was the one that backed down during those discussions.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned concerns regarding Turkey’s aggression and its implications for Greece. What do you suggest as the way forward?
**Kostas Karamanlis:** The concerns we have are indeed valid, stemming from Turkey’s revisionist stance. It’s essential that we maintain our national positions firmly. We must ensure that discussions about our national issues remain rooted in responsibility and unity. Criticism is sometimes misinterpreted, but it should facilitate dialogue rather than division.
**Interviewer:** Your speech also highlighted the dangers to democracy. What do you believe are the primary threats today?
**Kostas Karamanlis:** Today, democracy is challenged by various factors, including political polarization and the undermining of institutions. It is important that we address these dangers proactively to ensure that democracy flourishes in Greece. Supporting healthy political discourse and respecting laws is vital for safeguarding our democratic values.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Mr. Karamanlis.
**Kostas Karamanlis:** Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss these important issues.
