There are 48 deaths of workers in the construction of the Mayan Train: “they were preventable”

MEXICO CITY.- During the time in which the Mayan Train works They registered 48 people dead and 31 injured related to that project, reported Community Cohesion and Social Innovation AC

According to their report called “The preventable deaths of the Mayan Train”, These numbers of deaths and injuries were recorded between December 1, 2021 and February 27, 2024 during the works.

“These are preventable deaths from a priority project that generates jobs that are not decent jobs, these deaths occurred in the exercise or on the occasion of their work, during their work day or on their way to or from work,” he explains.

Deaths on the Mayan Train were preventable

48 workers, and people not involved in the project, have died during the construction of the Mayan Train from 2021 to 2024, deaths classified as preventable by the Community Cohesion and Social Innovation AC collective.

The first preventable death occurred on February 2, 2021 in Palenque, Chiapas, and the most recent, until the report was cut, was the February 20, 2024 in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo.

In addition, two deaths have been recorded of people who did not work on the Mayan Train, but the deaths were due to the work of the workers on said project.

There is also one worker with brain death and 31 injured due to work risks, linked to possible violations of labor human rights.

The report indicates that at least one worker has died due to alleged work risks on each of the seven sections of the Mayan Train.

The 48 deaths recorded in these three years occurred in at least 17 municipalities of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Yucatán y Veracruz.

In addition to the negative socio-environmental and socio-cultural impacts of the construction of the Mayan Train, activists highlight the need to guarantee that the work is carried out safely.

“It is not enough for the megaproject to announce that it will generate them to determine the type of impact,” the group points out.

It must be verified that jobs were actually created and that the necessary safety and hygiene regulations as well as workers’ rights are complied with.

“These jobs must respect, protect and guarantee the human right to decent work with characteristics such as: safety and hygiene at work and respect for the physical and mental integrity of workers,” he maintains.

“Otherwise, even if jobs are created, the human right to decent work may be violated,” the investigation stressed.
