There are 36 refugees at the Olympics

They compete under the same flag, but speak different languages and come from different parts of the world. After fleeing war and persecution in their homeland, 36 athletes from 11 countries will compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as part of the Olympic Refugee Team.

The team was created for Rio 2016 as a symbol of hope and to show the world the plight of refugees.

In Paris, refugee athletes will be participating at a time of record global migration and where hundreds of millions of people – many displaced from their homes – are forced to reinvent themselves.

Refugee athletes will take part in 12 sports, but for many, the road to Paris is already a triumph.

Some of these athletes are Fernando Dayán Jorge, Cuban by birth and who will compete in canoeing; Manizha Talash, who from Afghanistan will compete in breakdancing. Also Mohammad Amin Alsalami, from Syria, will participate in the long jump. In addition, Iman Mahdavi, of Iranian origin, will participate in wrestling.

The 2024 Olympic Games will begin next Friday, July 26.— AP
